The name Merlot originates from blackbirds who are particularly fond of the grape bunches. This variety predominates throughout the Bordeaux terroirs, representing 58% of the planted area. The Merlot typically expresses aromas of red fruits which give way over time to aromas of undergrowth and spices.

The Versant Merlot vines are situated on sunny south-facing hills near Ensérune (Languedoc-Roussillon). The soil is made up of limestone gravel which helps rainwater to penetrate well and gives more mature aromas and tannins.
